O-Sensei
Aiki
is not a technique to fight with or defeat the
enemy. It is the Way to reconcile the world, and make
human beings one family.
Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba
(1883-1969)
Morihei Ueshiba created Aikido during
the 1920s. Known
throughout the world as O- Sensei, or "Great Teacher",
Ueshiba was an extraordinary martial artist who reached the
highest level of mastery in the classical Japanese martial
arts. As a young man he mastered Ken-jitsu (sword
techniques), So-jitsu (spear techniques) and Ju-jitsu
(unarmed body techniques), and became one of the most
renowned martial artists of his day.
A deeply spiritual man, O-Sensei transmuted his technical
mastery of traditional martial arts into a new martial art. He
called Aikido the Art of Peace
and maintained that Budo or
"Martial Way" is a work of love, a path to overcome discord in
ourselves and bring peace to the world.
